PRE-PURCHASE SURVEYS

PRE-PURCHASE SURVEYS

PRE-PURCHASE SURVEYS

No matter how experienced a sailor you are or how many boats you have owned in the past, buying a second-hand yacht without the services of a professional marine surveyor is asking for trouble.

A pre-purchase survey is the most detailed type of survey we offer. It is a comprehensive inspection of the entire vessel, all its systems and fittings, and takes the time required to complete, depending on the size of the vessel being inspected and other logistical considerations.

Pre-purchase surveys are carried out in three stages:

Inspection of the hull and external structure, including propellers, masts and rudders.
On-board inspection of systems whilst the vessel is moored in a marina.
Sea trial to test engines, steering and systems under real-world conditions.

The resulting survey report is a detailed account of the condition of the vessel and all its systems as found at the time of the survey. The report can be used for marine insurance purposes, so there is no need for a separate insurance survey.

Pre-purchase surveys often pay for themselves because, in many cases, the surveyor discovers defects that allow you to negotiate a lower purchase price.

SUPERVISION OF WORKS

SUPERVISION OF WORKS

SUPERVISION OF WORKS

Boat building is rife with delays and cost overruns, and there are many dissatisfied new boat owners who simply haven’t received the yacht they paid for. If you are building a new yacht, you want to ensure that the shipyard is building it in accordance with the standards and specifications agreed in the contract.

The best way to ensure this is to appoint a marine surveyor as your official representative.

We offer a comprehensive yacht construction survey package consisting of three parts:

Pre-construction: Consultancy on general specifications, construction standards, the building contract, the construction schedule and the payment plan.
During construction: Regular visits to the shipyard with an email report following each inspection. In addition to quality control, we also monitor the construction schedule, ensuring that the client’s payments to the shipyard are in line with the actual stage of completion specified in the construction contract.
After construction: Commissioning of the yacht and testing of all systems under real-world conditions, followed by extensive sea trials until everything functions as advertised. Finally, we provide a comprehensive and final survey report, which can also be used for marine insurance claims.

DELIVERY OF NEW YACHTS

DELIVERY OF NEW YACHTS

DELIVERY OF NEW YACHTS

The handover of a new yacht to its first owner is usually a joyous occasion, but amidst all the excitement, important details are often overlooked. The proud new owner signs for the yacht and later discovers that some systems have not been properly commissioned.

If you are awaiting the delivery of a new yacht, we recommend that you commission us to carry out a thorough inspection of the new vessel just before the delivery date and that you are also present during the actual handover.

We will take care of all the last-minute technical details, allowing you to fully enjoy the occasion.

ESTIMATE OF DAMAGES

ESTIMATE OF DAMAGES

ESTIMATE OF DAMAGES

If your yacht sustains damage due to bad weather, a collision, running aground or any other type of incident, you must notify your insurance company immediately.

In most cases, the insurer will then appoint a loss adjuster (at their own expense) to assess the damage and act as a liaison between the yacht owner and the insurers.

The surveyor’s initial task is to investigate the cause of the incident, assess the damage and submit a preliminary report including recommendations for repairs and an estimate of the costs.

The surveyor then assists the yacht owner in obtaining quotes for repairs and selecting the most suitable repair firms. Once all repairs have been completed and all costs are known, the surveyor submits a final report to the insurance company.

Good cooperation between the insured (the yacht owner) and the surveyor is essential to ensure that a claim for damages proceeds smoothly and without delay.

Sea trials form part of any condition survey, but they can also be carried out separately. The aim is to test the propulsion system and controls under real-world conditions: main engines, steering, trim tabs and stabilisers, as well as generators, watermakers and sewage discharge systems; systems that cannot be assessed within a marina.

In the case of sailing yachts, we also hoist all the sails and check the deck hardware and running rigging.

NON-DESTRUCTIVE TESTING

NON-DESTRUCTIVE TESTING

NON-DESTRUCTIVE TESTING

Nowadays, non-destructive testing (NDT) is becoming increasingly common in yacht inspections. Vyba Yachts can carry out the following types of tests:

External inspections of the hull and deck
Hull thickness testing for steel or aluminium vessels.
Coating (paint) thickness testing.
Moisture testing for fibreglass boats.
Moisture testing for wooden hulls or boat interiors.
Electrical earth fault or stray current testing.
Engine or gearbox oil analysis.
Cylinder compression testing.

In most cases, we carry out these tests ourselves using our own equipment. In other cases, we use the services of a trusted subcontractor. Reports are issued for all types of non-destructive testing.

THE EXPERT REPORT

THE EXPERT REPORT

THE EXPERT REPORT

The survey report is a confidential document prepared exclusively for the surveyor’s client. It describes in detail the condition of the vessel and its equipment at the time of the survey.

The style of the survey report varies from ‘narrative’ to ‘checklist’. Vyba Yachts’ reporting style falls somewhere between these two extremes.

Our reports aim to convey all relevant details in a format that is easy to read and consult. We include numerous photographs to help clarify our conclusions.

The reports include a summary of deficiencies that outlines all defects found, together with recommendations for repairs. This summary can be used as a checklist for a refit or as a basis for negotiations with a potential buyer.
